Southwest Area

The Southwest Area Munitions Response Site (MRS) is currently in the Site Inspection (SI) stage of the MMRP investigative process. During this stage, the site is investigated to determine whether Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC), Munitions Constituents (MC) are present. The SI determines whether the site will continue to the Remedial Investigation (RI) phase or have no further action taken. The Southwest Area MRS is a privately owned area consisting of a 40-acre land parcel. The parcel is bounded to the north and the east by Camp William’s property and to the west and south by privately owned farmland. The majority of the property is tilled, open farmland, with the southeast corner of the parcel consisting of juniper woodland. The site has reportedly been cultivated for agriculture since before World War II.
In 1991 this MRS was included in a visual surface sweep called “operation clean sweep.” Documents reporting the findings of operation clean sweep included this MRS, the Southeast MRS and the Wood Hollow MRS as one area of investigation. Munitions have been present at the Wood Hollow MRS, but is unlikely that munitions will be present at this MRS. This assumption is based upon the lack of training records related to this area, and the fact that it has been privately owned and farmed so many years. To be sure this assumption is correct; a site investigation is being conducted to ensure this MRS is free of munitions.
The Southwest Area MRS is nearest the City of Eagle Mountain. The Wasatch Wing and Clay hunting establishment also owns a portion of the land on the Southwest Area MRS.
